Periodically the Water and Wastewater Department conducts a town-wide unidirectional flushing of fire hydrants. Water mains are flushed by releasing water from hydrants throughout town.
We will be conducting this flushing on Wednesday, March 20th and Thursday, March 21st during regular business hours. This schedule may be extended due to any other contributing factors.
There should not be any long-term impacts from the flushing program; however, some residents may notice short-term impacts such as:
- Discolored water from increased levels of dissolved iron
- Cloudy water from tiny air bubbles trapped in the pipe
- Temporary reductions in water pressure
These conditions are not a public health threat and will subside after flushing is complete.
As a precaution, avoid using the dishwasher, washing machine, and faucets (hot and cold) during flushing activities. Check your tap by running both your cold and hot water. If the water is discolored or cloudy, try running the cold water at full pressure for several minutes (up to 15) until the water runs clear. Then do the same for you hot water. Consider washing a load of dark-colored clothing before washing light-colored clothing.
If your water does not run clear after 15 minutes, please contact the Town at 410-632-2080 during normal business hours.
